MSU players charged with assault

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Five Mississippi State football players were charged with assaulting an off-duty police officer at a weekend party.

Sophomores Keith Fitzhugh, Derek Pegues, Michael Gates, Charles Burns and redshirt freshman Quinton Wesley were arrested and charged with felony assault Sunday, police said Monday.

The defendants were released on $25,000 bond.

Police chief David Lindley said officer Demetric Armstead attempted to intervene when an argument between two women attending a party hosted by two Mississippi State sororities grew violent on Saturday night. The suspects allegedly began to assault Armstead, knocking him to the floor and kicking him and striking him with their fists, he said.

Armstead attended the event with his fiancee, who is a member of one of the sororities.

Mike Nemeth, an athletic department spokesman, said football coach Sylvester Croom would wait for further legal actions against the players before implementing disciplinary procedures.
