Slowly but surely: Black coaches in the FBS

The hirings of Ron English, Mike Haywood, Mike Locksley and DeWayne Walker this offseason has increased the number of black head coaches at FBS schools to seven. Here's a look at the seven:

Black head coaches at FBS schools
Ron English, Eastern Michigan
Tenure: First year
The buzz: English was named the Rivals.com Defensive Coordinator of the Year in 2006 while leading Michigan to the Rose Bowl. He spent last season as Louisville's defensive coordinator.
Turner Gill, Buffalo
Tenure: 15-23 in three seasons
The buzz: Gill led Buffalo to the Mid-American Conference title, its first winning season as an FBS school and its first bowl game this season.
Mike Haywood, Miami University
Tenure: First year
The buzz: Haywood has a MAC background with stints at Ohio and Ball State, but he's best known for his work at LSU, Texas and Notre Dame over the past 14 years.
Mike Locksley, New Mexico
Tenure: First year
The buzz: The former Illinois offensive coordinator also has served as running backs coach at Florida and Maryland. He has a reputation as an outstanding recruiter.
Randy Shannon, Miami
Tenure: 12-13 in two seasons
The buzz: Miami showed improvement while playing plenty of freshmen this season, but Shannon now must find new offensive and defensive coordinators.
Kevin Sumlin, Houston
Tenure: 8-5 in one season
The buzz: Houston earned its first bowl victory since 1980 and ranked second in the nation in total offense during Sumlin's debut season.
DeWayne Walker, New Mexico State
Tenure: First year
The buzz: Walker was a respected defensive coordinator at UCLA who also has worked on the staffs of the NFL's New England Patriots, New York Giants and Washington Redskins.
