UCF went into the season as the top contender in the East Division of Conference USA, but detractors wondered whether the Knights would get the quarterback platy they needed.
Thanks to true freshman Jeffrey Godfrey, the Knights thrived. Godfrey, the leading career passer in Miami-Dade County history, started 11 of UCF's 13 games and is our C-USA freshman of the year. Godfrey led the Knights to the league title, and he has thrown for 2,042 yards and 13 TDs and has rushed for 546 yards and 10 more scores. He has completed 68.4 percent of his passes, which leads all freshman quarterbacks, and he is eighth nationally in passing efficiency.
Tulsa strong safety DeMarco Nelson is our top freshman defender. Nelson was second on the Golden Hurricane with 81 tackles and added a league-leading six interceptions, five pass breakups and a forced fumble. He returned one of those picks for a touchdown against Oklahoma State.
Rather then bypass some deserving candidates, we decided not to necessarily be position-specific (i.e., guards, tackles) on our offensive line.
