Watson interviews at Vandy again

Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson had a second interview with Vanderbilt on Thursday, has learned.

Stanford tight ends coach Greg Roman, Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst and Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell also remain in the mix.

The (Nashville) Tennessean reported that Vandy officials also have interest in Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo. He could become a factor after the Midshipmen finish their regular season Saturday against Army.

Tulsa coach Todd Graham interviewed but no longer is part of the process, has learned.

Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen may be emerging as the candidate at Pittsburgh. reports that Holgorsen and Pitt have had contact but didn't term the meeting as an interview. But Holgorsen told the Daily Oklahoman newspaper that any contact has been made.

It's believed Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson would prefer to hire an offense-minded coach.

Holgorsen coordinates the No. 1 offense in the nation (537.6 ypg) this season. Before that, the Mike Leach protege pushed the buttons on explosive offenses at Houston.

Others rumored to be potential targets are Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads, Temple coach Al Golden, Florida defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops and Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley.

The latest twist in the Miami search has Nebraska coach Bo Pelini involved, the Sun Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale) reported.

Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne denies giving Miami permission to talk with Miami, and Pelini won't address rumors.

Others believed to be involved to replace Randy Shannon are Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, Connecticut's Randy Edsall, Texas Tech s' Tommy Tuberville, Houston's Kevin Sumlin and Temple's Al Golden. But the Sun Sentinel reports that Mullen and Golden no longer are candidates.

Mullen's name immediately cropped up as a potential replacement when Urban Meyer retired at Florida on Wednesday.

The Northern Illinois search may be focusing on Rutgers receivers coach P.J. Fleck (an NIU alum), Notre Dame secondary coach Chuck Martin and Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Doeren. Martin succeeded Brian Kelly as coach at Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State (Mich.) and left Grand Valley to join Kelly with the Irish this season. ... Nebraska defensive ends coach/special teams coordinator John Papuchis has emerged as the leader to be the defensive tackles coach at Texas, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported. ... Another name connected to the Kent State job: LSU receivers coach/passing game coordinator Billy Gonzales, a former assistant at Bowling Green under Meyer. ... There have been no reported interviews for the Ball State job, though Stan Parrish was fired in late November. ... Arizona co-defensive coordinator Greg Brown and defensive tackles coach Mike Tuiasosopo have taken positions on new Colorado coach Jon Embree's staff, Arizona officials have confirmed.
