Rivals.com 2009 All-Big 12 team

The Big 12 long has been known for explosive offensive players, but the league has its share of defensive stars, too.

Indeed, there are so many outstanding defensive players that some of the nation's best defenders had to settle for second-team recognition on the Rivals.com All-Big 12 team.

The same goes for some of the nation's most dangerous big-play threats. And the league still has plenty of explosive offensive players, too.

ALL-BIG 12 FIRST-TEAM OFFENSE
Particulars: 6-2/210, Sr. High school: Tuscola (Texas) Jim Ned
Buzz: McCoy has set a national major-college record for career victories by a starting quarterback. He has completed 70.5 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,512 yards and 27 touchdowns this season.
Particulars: 6-2/227, Jr. High school: Hilliard (Fla.) High
Buzz: A junior college transfer, Thomas led the Big 12 in rushing with 1,265 yards. He also scored 11 touchdowns.
Particulars: 6-1/205, Sr. High school: Angleton (Texas) High
Buzz: He filled in for an injured Kendall Hunter and emerged as one of the Big 12's best. Toston was second in the conference in rushing with 1,177 yards and scored 11 TDs.
Particulars: 6-5/215, Jr. High school: Marlin (Texas) High
Buzz: He averages 137 receiving yards per game to lead the nation. He has 107 catches for 1,644 yards.
Particulars: 6-3/200, Jr. High school: Cedar Hill (Texas) High
Buzz: Briscoe's 15.92 yards per catch led the Big 12. He had 84 receptions for 1,337 yards and nine TDs, and he has said he will enter the NFL draft.
WR Jordan Shipley, Texas
Particulars: 6-0/190, Sr. High school: Burnet (Texas) High
Buzz: He is one of six receivers in the nation with more than 100 receptions. Shipley averaged 12.9 yards per grab on 106 catches.
T Russell Okung, Oklahoma State
Particulars: 6-5/300, Sr. High school: Houston Bush
Buzz: An Outland Trophy finalist, Okung was named the league's top lineman by conference coaches. He has posted 127 knockdown blocks and allowed just one sack.
Particulars: 6-5/318, Sr. High school: Longview (Texas) High
Buzz: He has been credited with 102 knockdown blocks and leads the Sooners with 885 snaps.
Particulars: 6-7/334, Sr. High school: Longview (Texas) Spring Hill
Buzz: He enjoyed a dominant season as the top blocker on an offense that ranked seventh in the nation. He was better this season than he was last season, when he was on some All-America teams.
G Kurtis Gregory, Missouri
Particulars: 6-5/305, Sr. High school: Blackburn (Mo.) Santa Fe
Buzz: He has been a consistent and reliable blocker for an offense that averages more than 417 yards per game.
Particulars: 6-3/305, Sr. High school: Allen (Texas) High
Buzz: Among six Remington Award finalists, Walton had 112 knockdown blocks in 12 games and graded 90 percent or higher in nine games.
ALL-BIG 12 FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE
Particulars: 6-3/240, Jr. High school: DeSoto (Texas) High
Buzz: Miller leads the nation with 17 sacks, which is more than the Aggies managed as a team last season. His sack total was the second-highest in school history.
T Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma
Particulars: 6-4/297, Jr. High school: Oklahoma City Southeast
Buzz: An All-America candidate, McCoy has 31 tackles, with 14.5 for loss. He also has five sacks.
Particulars: 6-4/300, Sr. High school: Portland (Ore.) Grant
Buzz: A finalist and probably the favorite for all the major defensive awards, Suh has a shot at the Heisman, too. He has posted an amazing 82 tackles, with 12 sacks, 23 tackles for loss and 11 passes defended. He blocked three kicks, too.
E Brandon Sharpe, Texas Tech
Particulars: 6-3/254, Sr. High school: Lyons (Ga.) Toombs County
Buzz: Sharpe has 15 sacks, which is the second-highest total in the nation. He also broke the school's single-season record.
LB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma
Particulars: 6-2/232, Soph. High school: San Antonio Lee
Buzz: He leads the Sooners with 100 tackles. He also has nine tackles for loss.
LB Joe Pawelek, Baylor
Particulars: 6-2/240, Sr. High school: Spring Branch (Texas) Smithson Valley
Buzz: He had 109 tackles, 2.5 sacks and an interception.
LB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri
Particulars: 6-2/245, Sr. High school: Jasper (Texas) High
Buzz: He has 104 tackles, including 14 for loss. He has 4.5 sacks and an interception.
CB Prince Amukamara, Nebraska
Particulars: 6-1/200, Jr. High school: Glendale (Ariz.) Apollo
Buzz: He ranks 11th in the nation with 16 passes defended. That includes five interceptions. He also has made 61 tackles.
CB Perrish Cox, Oklahoma State
Particulars: 6-0/198, Sr. High school: Waco (Texas) University
Buzz: Cox leads the nation in passes defended with 19. He also has four interceptions.
FS Earl Thomas, Texas
Particulars: 5-10/197, Soph. High school: West Orange (Texas) Stark
Buzz: A Thorpe Award finalist, Thomas leads the Big 12 with eight interceptions. He also is second among Texas players with 71 tackles.
SS Larry Asante, Nebraska
Particulars: 6-1/215, Sr. High school: Alexandria (Va.) Hayfield
Buzz: Well-known as a punishing hitter, Asante has posted 76 tackles and forced two fumbles. He also has two interceptions.
ALL-BIG 12 FIRST-TEAM SPECIALISTS
K Alex Henery, Nebraska
Particulars: 6-2/175, Jr. High school: Omaha (Neb.) Burke
Buzz: Henery has made 20-of-24 field-goal attempts, including eight from at least 40 yards. His longest is a 52-yarder. Three of his misses were from at least 50 yards.
P Tress Way, Oklahoma
Particulars: 6-1/215, R-Fr. High school: Tulsa (Okla.) Union
Buzz: Way leads the Big 12 with a 45.5-yard average on 57 punts. He has had 20 punts that covered at least 50 yards and 15 were killed inside the 20.
KR Brandon Banks, Kansas State
Particulars: 5-7/150, Sr. High school: Garner (N.C.) High
Buzz: He led the Big 12 and was fourth in the nation among players with at least 20 returns with a 29.8-yard average. He had four returns for touchdowns.
PR Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma
Particulars: 5-11/178, Soph. High school: Norman (Okla.) High
Buzz: The explosive Broyles led the Big 12 with a 16.5-yard return average on punts. He had an 87-yard return for a touchdown.
