The Coaching Rumor Mill

UPDATED: Nov. 20, 2007 Coaching Rumor Mill
Dennis Franchione, Texas A&M. RECORD: 6-5, 3-4 Big 12.
Outlook: Fran will be gone by season's end. Hot name of late is West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez. Tommy Tuberville and Jeff Tedford may also be getting calls.
Rumor Mill: Rich Rodriguez, Tommy Tuberville, Jeff Tedford, Steve Spurrier, Mike Sherman.
Last week: Idle. This week: vs. Texas.
Bill Callahan, Nebraska. Record: 5-6, 2-5 Big 12.
Outlook: Callahan is clearly gone at the end of the season. No one knows what new AD Tom Osborne is thinking, but Navy coach Paul Johnson continues to impress.
Rumor Mill: Turner Gill, Bo Pelini, Jim Grobe, Paul Johnson.
Last week: Idle. This week: at Colorado.
Houston Nutt, Arkansas. Record: 7-4, 3-4 SEC.
Outlook: The names of possible replacements being bandied about are long, varied and perhaps over-reaching for an Arkansas program that hasn't carried the same clout since it joined the SEC.
Rumor Mill: Butch Davis, Tommy Tuberville, Jimmy Johnson.
Last week: Beat Mississippi State 45-31. This week: at LSU.
Mike Stoops, Arizona. Record: 5-6, 4-4 Pac-10.
Outlook: Off the hot board. The staff has at least one more year.
Last week: Beat No. 2 Oregon 34-24. This week: Idle.
Greg Robinson, Syracuse. Record: 2-9, 1-5 Big East.
Outlook: Likely gone.
Rumor Mill:It's still a definite possibility that Robinson gets another year. If he was fired, the names that would probably come up are Skip Holtz, Paul Johnson, Turner Gill (if he doesn't go to Nebraska) and maybe Illinois O.C. Mike Locksley. The most interesting name would be UConn coach Randy Edsall. He is a Syracuse alum. He might even be their first choice, but it's questionable he would make the jump within the conference, especially since UConn's recent money/facilities commitment to football has been arguably superior to Syracuse's.
Last week: Lost to UConn 30-7. This week: vs. Cincinnati.
Bill Doba, Washington State. Record: 4-7, 2-6 Pac-10.
Outlook: The AD has publically said he is going to wait until the end of the season to make any decision on Doba's future. The buyout required to make such a move is hefty by WSU standards, so unless the Cougars lose both remaining games to Oregon State and Washington, it is not likely to happen.
Last week: Lost to Oregon State 52-17. This week: at Washington.
Tommy Bowden, Clemson. Record: 8-3, 5-3 ACC.
Outlook: Off of the hot seat. Only a complete implosion or an embarassing loss to South Carolina could change things.
Last week: Lost to Boston College 20-17. This week: at South Carolina.
Karl Dorrell, UCLA. Record: 5-5, 4-3 Pac-10.
Outlook: "I will be very interested to see how we finish the season," UCLA AD Dan Guerrero told the Los Angeles Times. "And you can use that." The Bruins are 0-2 since the AD's statement.
Rumor Mill: Rick Neuheisel.
Last week: Idle. This week: vs. Oregon.
Ed Orgeron, Ole Miss. Record: 3-8, 0-7 SEC.
Outlook: The success of state rival Sylvester Croom can't help matters. Beat MSU and Orgeron may secure another year.
Rumor Mill: Art Briles.
Last week: Lost to LSU 41-24. This week: at Mississippi State.
Lloyd Carr, Michigan. Record: 8-4, 6-2 Big Ten.
Outlook: Officially resigned Monday morning.
Rumor Mill: Les Miles, Brian Kelly, Cam Cameron.
Last week: Lost to Ohio State 14-3. This week: Completed regular season.
Dave Wannstedt, Pittsburgh. Record: 4-6, 2-3 Big East.

Outlook: Likely to return but the Rutgers game may be telling.
Last week: Lost at Rutgers 20-16. This week: vs. South Florida.
Chan Gailey, Georgia Tech. Record: 7-4, 4-4 ACC.

Outlook: Gailey could be in trouble if the Yellow Jackets drop a sixth straight to rival Georgia.
Last week: Beat North Carolina 27-25. This week: vs. Georgia.
Mark Snyder, Marshall. Record: 2-8, 2-4 C-USA.
Outlook: Things are very sensitive at Marshall right now. The win over East Carolina was a good start, but may not be enough.
Last week: Lost to Houston 35-28. This week: vs. UAB.
Sonny Lubick, Colorado State. Record: 2-9, 1-6 Mountain West.
Outlook: The sun is setting on a great career.
Last week: Beat Georgia Southern 42-34. This week: vs. Wyoming.
Rickey Bustle, Louisiana-Lafayette. Record: 3-8, 3-3 Sun Belt.
Outlook: Off the hot seat. Staff has been given another year.
Last week: Beat Florida International 38-28. This week: vs. Louisiana-Monroe.
Ted Roof, Duke. Record: 1-10, 0-7 ACC.
Outlook: Even a win over Notre Dame or North Carolina may not be enough to save his job.
Last week: Lost to Notre Dame 28-7. This week: at North Carolina.
Jeff Bower, Southern Miss. Record: 6-5, 5-3 Conference USA.
Outlook: Bower is on shaky ground after losing to Memphis. AD Richard Giannini told the Clarion Ledger "When the season is over, Jeff and I will sit down and evaluate where the program is at."
Last week: Won at UTEP 56-30. This week: vs. Arkansas State.
Guy Morriss, Baylor. Record: 3-9, 0-8 Big 12. *FIRED*
Possible replacements: Mike Singletary is the front-runner. Houston coach Art Briles, Chris Petersen, Terry Bowden and Larry Fedora also possible.
Last week: Lost to Oklahoma State 45-14. This week: Completed regular season.
Phil Bennett, SMU. Record: 1-10, 0-7 C-USA. *FIRED*
Possible replacements: Louisville's Steve Kragthorpe appears to be the leader. Major Applewhite, Paul Johnson Terry Bowden, Jon Tenuta, Randy Allen, Dennis Green, Houston Nutt have also been mentioned.
Last week: Lost to UCF 49-20. This week: at Memphis.
