Maxwell talks Elite 11 experience
Last week Michigan State Spartan quarterback commitment Andrew Maxwell of Midland High School attended the Elite 11 quarterback camp in California. Maxwell was consistently cited as one of the top performers at the event and solidified his status as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation for the class of 2009. SpartanMag.ocm caught up with Maxwell and got the latest.
What part of the camp did you enjoy the most?
"What I liked the most was getting to interact and know the other players," Maxwell said. "Getting to know guys that are in the same position that I am. Just having fun and competing with them."
You obviously did a lot of drill work. What type of things do they have you guys do when you did have some down time?
"They had a few TV's set up so we were able to play some X-Box," he said. "We also got to go to the beach and we had a barbecue. We also went to an open air mall that was nice. They kept us busy."
The reports out of the Elite 11 Camp from some of the analyst in attendance were very positive about your performance. What type of feedback did you get from the coaches there?
"They said that I had real good footwork," Maxwell said. "It all starts with your footwork, so that is something that I have worked on. They also said I had pretty good accuracy and arm strength."
After going head-to head with the best quarterbacks in the nation, what areas do you think you need to improve on?
"I think I need to improve on everything. I am not where I need to be, so I need to improve every aspect of my game, my footwork, accuracy and arm strength. It all goes together, you can do everything right but if you accuracy is off I doesn't matter," Maxwell said.
The camp has a ton of high-profile coaches and counselors, what was it like to work with them?
"Coach Bob Johnson runs things and I got to work with him quite a bit. He is a great coach. I also worked with his son Bret (Johnson) and I learned a lot from him. Tee Martin was one of the coaches as well. Guys like Mark Sanchez, Curtis Painter and Matt Stafford were all there and it was good to watch them and learn from them as they are great players."
What type of stuff did you work-on in addition to the actually physical aspects of the quarterback position?
"After the workouts we would get lunch and then have a chalk talk. We would eat and watch film to learn more about coverages. Everyone had to go to the chalk board and was asked to give each other our best questions. We then had to go through all of our progression and why we would make those reads. It was a great way to learn."
Working out with the other quarterbacks was there as sense of competition or camaraderie. Who are some of the guys you got to know well?
We all got a long and that is what made it a lot of fun. I hung out a lot with Garrett Gilbert (Texas), Bryn Renner (North Carolina), and Zach Mettenberger (Georgia), but everyone hung out together a lot and that is what made it such a great time."
Next up for Maxwell is his senior season for Midland High School. The Chemics are always one of the top programs in Michigan, but with Maxwell at the helm, it could be a special season. Maxwell and Midland hope to take the season one step further this year and bring a championship home.
SparrtanMag.com will have season long coverage of the future Spartan signal-caller.
