Series by series: UW's defense against Purdue

MADISON - Saturday's 37-0 drubbing of Purdue was the first Badger shutout since head coach Bret Bielema's debut as a head coach. It was also the first shutout for UW in a Big Ten games since 1999. More than anything, it helped the team get back on the winning track following a two-game slump before the bye.

Now, one day after the blowout win, BadgerBlitz.com takes a look back at the game that was. The following is a series-by-series recap of every defensive possession.

First quarter:

Defensive series No. 1: Started on Purdue 27 yard line following kickoff (7-0 Wisconsin)
Plays: 6
Yards given up: 15
Result: 53-yard Chris Summers punt.

Key play: On third and seven, it looked as though Devin Smith forced a fumble when the ball came out of Keith Smith's hands. However, the pass was ruled incomplete.

Defensive series No. 2: Started on UW 47 yard line following 39-yard Brad Nortman punt.
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 6
Result: 41-yard Summers punt.

Key play: Jaevery McFadden pushed Ralph Bolden out of bounds four yards shy of the marker. It looked as though Bolden turned the corner, but his foot barely hit the white tape, forcing the punt.


Second quarter:

Defensive series No. 3: Started on Purdue 33 yard line following kickoff. (10-0 Wisconsin)
Plays: 9
Yards given up: 37
Result: Turnover on downs.

Key play: Purdue was at UW's 30 yard line, but as Joey Elliott rolled to his right, he threw across his body to Aaron Valentin who wasn't able to get a foot inbounds.

Defensive series No. 4: Started on Purdue 11 yard line following 30-yard Nortman punt.
Plays: 3
Yards given up: -3
Result: Smith interception.

Key play: On third and 13, Elliott completely locked on to his receiver and Smith just simply stepped in front of him to make the easy interception.

Defensive series No. 5: Started on Purdue 30 yard line following kickoff. (17-0 Wisconsin)
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 0
Result: David Gilbert blocked punt returned by Aaron Henry for a touchdown. (24-0 Wisconsin)

Key play: Gilbert soared over the punt shield and got a hand on the ball. Henry picked up the loose ball and scored UW's third special team's touchdown of the year.

Defensive series No. 6: Started on Purdue 20 yard line following kickoff.
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 9
Result: 50-yard Summers punt.

Key play: Patrick Butrym was able to tackle Elliott from behind just before he picked up the first down on third and 10.

Defensive series No. 7: Started on Purdue 23 yard line following 36-yard Nortman punt
Plays: 4

Result: End of half

Key play: Elliott and the Purdue offense moved the ball to get into position for a Hail Mary at the end of the half, but Elliott failed to get a pass off before stepping out of bounds on the final play.

Third quarter:

Defensive series No. 8: Started on Purdue 36 yard line following kickoff.
Plays: 3
Yards given up: -5
Result: 44-yard Summers punt.

Key play: Purdue receivers dropped back-to-back passes on second and third down that forced the punt.

Defensive series No. 9: Started on Purdue 26 yard line following kickoff. (31-0 Wisconsin)

Result: 39-yard Summers punt.

Key play: On second and seven, J.J. Watt stuffed the Bolden run and dropped him for only a one-yard gain.

Defensive series No. 10: Started on Purdue 20 following kickoff. (34-0 Wisconsin)

Result: 32-yard Summers punt.

Key play: Again Purdue receiver Keith Carlos dropped the Elliott pass that would have given the Boilers a first down.

Defensive series No. 11: Started on Purdue 20 yard line following 46-yard Nortman punt.

Result: 40-yard Summers punt.

Key play: Purdue tried to catch the Badger defense out of position with a draw on third and 13, but O'Brien Schofield dropped the runner after only a four-yard gain.

Defensive series No. 12: Started on Purdue 28 yard line following 36-yard Nortman punt.

Yards given up: -8
Result: Chris Borland fumble recovery.

Key play: Borland broke into the backfield and drilled the Purdue runner, forcing the fumble. Then Borland added to the play by falling on the loose ball.

Fourth quarter:

Defensive series No. 13: Started on Purdue 39 following kickoff. (37-0 Wisconsin)

Yards given up: 7
Result: 39-yard Summers punt.

Key play: McFadden dropped the receiver for a one-yard loss on third and two, forcing the punt.

Defensive series No. 14: Started on UW 39 yard line following interception.

Result: Turnover on downs

Key play: Purdue got inside the Badger 10 yard line, but wanting to preserve the shutout, the UW defense held strong. On fourth down, Watt batted the pass down to finalize the turnover on downs.

Plays: 3
Yards given up: -6
Result: Borland fumble recovery

Key play: On third and 15, Purdue running back Jaycen Taylor fumbled the handoff and Borland pounced on the ball.
