EAST LANSING, Mich. - Blair White went from obscure walk-on, to surprise contributor, to a key component of the Michigan State offense in 2008.

This summer, he has become one of the faces of the Spartans' football program as he readies for his senior season.

White graduated in May with a degree in human biology and a 3.88 GPA. He represented all Michigan State men's sports in addressing more than 600 Spartans fans who attended the first stop of the Coaches on the Road alumni function in Grand Rapids, Mich., earlier this month.

The fifth-year senior wasn't available for media interviews during the event. But coach Mark Dantonio never gets tired of talking about White.

"Here is a guy who came in and worked very hard to earn a scholarship, first of all, and finally did so last year," Dantonio said. "Blair has come a little bit at a time. It's a little bit like Travis Key, who was a captain for us a couple of years ago, coming out of obscurity. I think Blair White is going to do the same thing. People respect that about players when they do it the hard way. He is an extremely hard worker.

"Now comes roles of leadership and those type of things, so he is going to continue to grow in that area."

White led Michigan State with 43 catches in 2008 and was voted honorable mention All-Big Ten.

White might have been short on scholarship offers and media attention when he came out of Saginaw Nouvel Catholic in 2005. But don't ever say the 6-foot-2 White was short on physical gifts.

"He is deceptively fast," Dantonio said. "He runs great routes. You saw him run away from people in a couple of games this year and the Michigan game probably sticks out. He vertical jumps 38 inches. He is explosive. He is big. He is weighing 205. He can catch the ball. So he is deceptive in that area. But you can't say enough about him in terms of his work ethic, his toughness and what he does for this football team.

"He continues to grow. The reason I say that is that now the expectations are there, whereas last year or the year before the expectations weren't there. So he must continue to grow, and I think he is doing that."
