Herbstreit: Michigan isn't Big Ten's best
Always a favorite of Michigan fans - typically because he gives them something to talk about -- ESPN College Gameday's Kirk Herbstreit shared his comments about U-M and the Big Ten at the conference's annual Media Day Tuesday. Read on to see who he thinks should have been the preseason No. 1 team (hint: it wasn't Michigan)
On his thought process about the Big Ten's best team:
"I would have put Penn State No. 1 and the reason I would is because of their schedule. They have to go to Michigan, but they have everybody else at home and they have [senior quarterback] Anthony Morelli. I think what he did against Tennessee in the bowl game did wonders for his confidence. I've seen countless quarterbacks who go through that first year and either finish with that last game or a bowl game with a good performance and it does wonders going into the offseason. I expect him to be one of the best players in the Big Ten.
"That's a strong statement, but looking what's around him
it's almost like people have forgotten about that receiving corps. [Junior] Derrick Williams is, to me, Teddy Ginn. He had to fight through some injuries in the last year. It was a down year. But as a freshman he was an amazing talent. And if you can find a tailback to take some of the pressure -- if that happens that offense is going to be very dynamic and the defense is always going to competitive. I expect a lot from Morelli."
On his thoughts about the 1-2-3 preseason poll:
"I came here wondering who was going to be the one team they left out, because I think with all four of those teams you can put them in a hat, mix them up and pick them out. I thought it would be Ohio State, but based on their accomplishments and history maybe they'd throw them in instead. I didn't think it'd be Penn State. For me, if I'm a Penn State fan, nothing can make me happier than for the Penn State players and coaches to come here and hear from every media member how they weren't picked top three. If I'm a Penn State fan I love it. Get them to a point where they're infuriated about it because that will only add to their motivation. I'd rather them picked fourth than first."
