Aggies kick off important season Saturday
Heading into every college football season every fan hears the same thing about their team. The talent is better, the team chemistry is better or that everyone's attitude is better. Everything is positive and good coming out of training camp.
But then the season comes around and everyone knows exactly how good their team is once it faces someone else. Some of those preseason words come true while others shatter. For Texas A&M, the 2009 season couldn't be more important - and those words better ring true if the Aggies hope to show progress that gives signs of an improving program that can one day be on the same level of Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12 conference once again.
The words coming out of camp and the week leading up to A&M's season opener against New Mexico Saturday at 6 p.m. are much of the same that everyone is hearing about every team in college football this week. The Aggies are better, they have more talent and the team is coming together.
But it takes the season to prove that all those things are true. For A&M, proving it doesn't necessarily mean more wins although a goal of six W's and a bowl game should be the benchmark for what could be termed a "foundation year" rather than a rebuilding one.
