Georgia DT gets pleasant surprise

Shawn Green didn't know what to expect when he picked up the phone last Thursday and dialed a strange telephone number.

The defensive tackle from Loganville (Grayson), Ga., didn't think he knew anyone with a 662 area code. He does now, and if things go Terry Price's way, he might have a lot more contacts in north Mississippi before too long.

Green was offered a scholarship by Ole Miss when the number he dialed, the one belonging to the Rebels' defensive line coach, was answered.

"It's my first SEC offer," Green said. "It was shocking more than anything I else. I had sent in a highlight tape and (Price) said he really liked my tape and wanted me to come on over."

Green, who also has scholarship offers from Michigan State, East Carolina, Indiana and Toledo, will visit Ole Miss unofficially on April 11.

"I'm pretty much wide open," said Green, a 6-foot-2, 275-pounder. "I'm trying to go visit some schools before I narrow things."

Green said his strengths on the field are his aggressiveness and his quick feet.

"I'm trying to keep going all the time," Green said. "I have a motor and I'm explosive. I stay calm during games, too."

Green recorded 69 tackles _ including 22 for losses _ and five sacks as a junior. He has a 2.6 core grade-point average and is waiting to get his results back from the SAT. He'll take the ACT Saturday.
