VIDEO and TRANSCRIPT: Dantonio kicks off spring FB
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio kicked off Spring football with a press conference at the Breslin Center on Tuesday afternoon.
Among the topics touched on by the third-year Spartan coach are Michigan State's expectations heading into the year, potential position moves during the spring, and what is expected to be a heated quarterback battle between Keith Nichol and Kirk Cousins for the right to replace Brian Hoyer as Michigan State's starter.
Potential position moves include Antonio Jeremiah to offensive line, Ashton Henderson to safety, walk-on Andrew Pendy fullback, Drew Stevens and David Rolf to defensive end.
Dantonio said that freshmen Donald Spencer and Patrick White will get looks at defensive back and receiver this spring. The Spartan coach said that he wants both players to know what they are going to play relatively quickly so they can start the process of getting on the field as true freshmen.
Dantonio also mentioned that despite the fact that Michigan State will have 20 seniors, there will be an immediate opening for freshmen to play this season. Michigan State has played between 6 and 7 true freshmen during Dantonio's first two seasons as Spartan coach. That number could increase this fall given Michigan State's outstanding 2009 recruiting class.
Dantonio said there is no change in the status of Glenn Winston, who is suspended indefinitely. The Spartan head coach also did not rule out the return of Roderick Jenrette, who missed all of last season.
